Cons: Calls roll everyday. The class is so boring because she reads exactly from the powerpoints and is very monotone.
Overall a very nice lady though who knows her stuff.
5 point to exam credit per attending some outside activity
easy if you read before the lecture.. as that is how you should typically learn
gives you all the answers if you pay attention in class
Cons: can be boring.
some might not think this is a con... but for your grade's sake, a computer does not help you pay attention to the answers she spoon feeds you during lecture
you make the class. if you participate she gets into it and it can be fun. if you sit behind your laptop on reddit all day, it will be boring and you will complain when you get a c on her easy tests. 4 tests. all equally weighted and. I had a 99.7 going into the final and she let me, as well as a bunch of others not take the final which made for a less stressful finals week! also, if you are taking latin 1001/1002 it would not be a bad idea to take this at the same time. it facillitates better leearning and she even told the class a story which just so happened to be my latin 1002 exam translation the next day.. oh if you dont read the stories til the last minute, you ARE SOL.
Cons: Final worth 50% of grade.
I took this class online, so my experience was a bit different than someone taking the class at UGA. The class had 10 online quizzes that we had to complete and then a final exam that was worth 50% of the final grade. The quizzes were easy and open book. I never even bought the encyclopedia, just the textbook and I still got an A in the class. It was kind of stressful that the final was worth so much though.
Cons: Very boring class.
Hard tests.
Corrigan is great and is generally willing to work with students. But the class is very dry and boring and the tests were pretty hard. I struggled to get a B.
Cons: The amount of reading got to be a little much at times, especially with other classes to consider. But generally, as long as you go with the syllabus for when to read the material and manage your time/space it out, you'll be fine. One thing to mention, though, is that for the break-out sessions with your TA, you need to have read the assigned sections. The breakout sessions are where you are quizzed on info; tests are on class-days (for the most part).
As long as you're interested in it, the class isn't difficult in terms of material-type. There are no difficult concepts to master/remember. Everything, all of the material for tests, comes directly from the powerpoints and lecture notes. The notes you take are basically an expansion of topics covered in the powerpoints, although the slides are mostly guidelines, with the majority of the info. coming from Corrigan's actual, verbal lectures. When you combine those notes with the readings in the textbook (which has a review-type set-up at the end of each section/chapter) and Odyssey (when you're assigned to read that), you're golden. Also, for the Odyssey section, there are videos on YouTube by SparkNotes that are helpful - just don't rely wholly on them for the material, because they're significantly condensed and definitely not a sufficient /reliable resource for the test.
Gives 10-12 points of bonus per test
Though the textbook is referenced, 99% of test material comes from the lecture, so you don't really need the book
Non cumulative final
Cons: Boring
Lots of names to remember
Tests are 40 fill in the blank and then you pick 4 of 6 short answer. Though its boring, its incredibly easy and doesn't require much outside time, just make sure you show up to class.
Cons: Corrigan is so passionate about Mythology that she speaks really fast during lecture while everyone is trying to take notes.
Make sure you read, study, and you'll do fine! The break-out sessions are pretty enjoyable too.
Cons: Extremely boring and hard to listen to. Goes off on exclusive tangents...if you do not have any background with Roman history, you often will not know what she's talking about.. Makes Classics jokes which are probably humorous to said group of exclusive individuals understanding them. Tests have many obscure questions, need to know how to spell/name characters...hint: their names all start with the letter A, so good luck with that.
-Interesting subject matter
-Good study guide
-posts notes on ELC
Cons: -Not very vibrant personality
-Tests not too hard, but you have lots of readings to complete. You don't necessarily have to read them though as long as you study power points enough.
-Very strict attendance policy
Cons: Kinda boring lecturer. You still need to go to class because she takes attendance and you need to take notes because the powerpoints dont say everything. You have to memorize how to spell the names of the people for the tests.
Read the works and memorize how to spell the names for tests. Do the study guide and you should be fine on the tests.
Cons: The tests are extremely difficult and you have to read a lot. She goes through the notes quickly, and if you miss some, the ones online are not helpful.
I would not take this class. It's way too hard for an intro class. I felt like everyone in there was a classics major. The paper at the end boosted my grade, but the tests were super hard and you had to read a ton of boring material. It's way too much work for an intro class.
Cons: Lectures all class so it can get boring especially there is nothing but lecture for each book that is read.
It was a good class, attend class, listen, and take good notes. Read the books and you can get a good grade. She gives extra credit (usually 10 points) for every test which can help a lot.
Cons: Lecture can be boring sometimes
Overall, I would highly recommend this class. The only difference between the honors section and the regular section is that the honors class has to do a presentation and write a paper, which are not really hard. Dr. Corrigan is really nice and can be a really funny lecturer. She's flexible with assignments (she changed the date of a test because our class didn't want to take it on a certain day, and she didn't really care if you couldn't turn in your paper on time due to unforeseen circumstances). Easy class, definitely take it.
Lots of discussion
Mostly interesting
Cons: Goes on random tangents sometimes
It's a lot of reading
I really enjoy this class
Cons: LOTS OF READING. And you HAVE TO READ if you want to do well on the test. Also, if you're not a Latin major (I've never had Latin in my life) you'll be fine, but you may be lost in some of the discussions. Corrigan really gets into Latin.
Great teacher! The lectures can be boring, but if you're interested in Roman culture, taking this class is a must! Get the honors section if you can. She seems boring at first, but after a few weeks, she really warmed up to our class. She has a very dry sense of humor that seeps through into her lectures and makes everything a lot more entertaining.
Nice professor
Easy tests
Cons: Lots of reading and terms.
Tests are fill in the blank with no word bank.
I read the text more than my notes from class, and I love Greek Mythology. Received an A.
Cons: Lots of information is covered. Missing class or not taking notes will definitely get you one of the few Ds or Fs she hands out.
No real discussion about the text can be a pro and a con. It makes class a little less interesting, but she does cover everything that will be on the exam. She doesn't surprise you with anything on test day. Personally, I loved the class.
Cons: All you do the entire time is listen to her lecture about the readings...while it is informative and helpful for the test it can can very boring- take a lot of notes.
